Growth Form: Trees, shrubs, or perennial herbs with woody rootstocks, usually armed with prickles.

Leaves: Leaves compound (pinnately trifoliate). Alternate. Blades often deciduous when flowering. Petiolate. Stipules present; Leaflets glandular–stipellate.

Flowers: Flowers grouped in fascicles of (2)3(–6) spirally on the inflorescence axis, inflorescences racemose, erect or horizontal. Flowers papilionaceous, bisexual (perfect). Calyx campanulate, tubular, or spathaceous, sometimes cleft or bilabiate, sometimes with apical teeth. Corolla usually red or orange, standard much larger than wings and keel, keel petals distinct or coherent. Stamens 10, monadelphous or diadelphous. Ovary superior, stipitate, pubescent; ovules usually 8–15; style glabrous; stigma capitate.

Fruit: Pods subligneous; chartaceous; or fleshy; rarely aculeate or winged; often deeply constricted between the seeds and moniliform. Seeds red; particolored (red and black); or brown; usually firm and smooth.
